Core competence

The nature, composition and formation history of geological samples and inorganic solids are recorded with the aid of geochemical analysis and electron-optical and optical examination methods.

Application-related research topics

  • Mineralogical characterization of natural stones and other inorganic solids (composition, microstructure)
  • Creation of high-resolution material contrast images
  • Chemical mapping (element distribution maps)
  • Weathering profiles
  • Petrography and petrogenesis
  • Petrological interpretation of geochemical data
  • Surfaces of materials and natural stones

Special equipment

  • Microsection preparation laboratory (thin/thick section)
  • Polarization microscope
  • Cathodoluminescence microscope
  • JSM-6510 scanning electron microscope incl. energy dispersive X-ray analysis (chemical analysis)
  • Electron beam microprobe JXA-8200 (microanalysis)
  • X-ray diffractometer EMPYREAN (transmission, reflection, 1D maps)
  • Element analyzer EA 3000 (TC, TOC, TN, H2O+)
  • ICP-OES

Cooperation offers/services

  •     Light-optical (polarization microscopy: reflected/transmitted light; binocular) and electron-optical (cathodoluminescence; scanning electron microscopy) imaging
  •     Preparation of thin and thick sections
  •     Geochemical analyses (major/trace elements, loss on ignition, mineral chemistry) on request
  •     data interpretation
